Adults Want to Play Sports Too: How to Build a Community of Competition

A lot of us have fond memories of playing all kinds of sports in school.  Some of us even get to experience playing a varsity sport in high school, maybe even on a team that went to or even won a state championship.  For 99% of us (ok, I didn’t research the number, but it’s really high) as soon as that last high school game is over, that’s it.  No more sports.   I think that’s a shame. Adults want to play sports too.

We all love watching sports and wearing our favorite team jersey. For a lot of us though, there’s still a drive to compete. I’m not talking about elite, professional competition. I’m talking about competing against those in your bracket of ability. I think it’s human nature to want to test yourself. There’s no reason why we can’t continue to do that for as long as we’re physically capable. And you’re more capable than you realize. Adults want to play sports too.

There is a serious lack of sports participation opportunities for adults in this country.  Rightfully so, there are some great opportunities for youth.  Little League, YMCA, Parks and Recreation, AAU Basketball, and so on.  Some of those local parks and recreation have some adult options, but most are lacking financial support.  This is disappointing because adults want to play sports too.

The goal of Authority Athletics is to remedy that.  To begin with, we want to encourage those to take advantage of whatever opportunities that their local organizations offer them.  For those that live in an area that doesn’t provide adults with playing opportunities there are some things that can be done.

First, if you’re passionate about a sport and want to be able to play again at your competition level, believe me, there are other adults that have that same desire to play.  Just because we’re getting older doesn’t mean we don’t want to compete.  Competition helps grow a community.  I urge you to reach out to others in your area.  Here are some ways to help grow a fun and engaging competitive community.

Start a social media group.  Post your desire to start at least pick up games at local parks.  Believe me, people will show up.  If you want to play badly enough, take charge and put the word out.  Come up with your community guidelines that you will play by.  Start a small collection to buy some equipment that the group can use.  Build your community!  Even if you’ve never played before you can start a group and people will come.  Build it, and people will come.  Now go on, play, be active, compete, and have fun.

Let us know what local groups you have started. We would love to hear about it because, after all, adults want to play sports too.
