The Los Angeles Lakers were recently swept by the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. So, one has to ask…is this the last we have seen of Lebron James in a Lakers uniform?

It’s a complicated question that has many variables. What we can expect is that Lebron will opt out of his current contract and officially enter free agency. Where he goes from there is anybody’s guess.

The main factor in his decision will be Lebron James motivator for next season. Does he want to win now? If so, the likely decision will not be the Lakers. The Lakers have some quality players on their club but as was shown over the last week, they are not a club in contention for a title.

James has made it perfectly clear that he wants to finish his career playing alongside his son, Bronny James. The younger James has officially declared for the upcoming NBA draft which will add an intriguing layer to Lebron’s decision. Could a club reach out and take Bronny James way ahead of his mock projections? I think that is certainly an option. If you draft Bronny, you could easily lure Lebron James to your club and benefit from the money and marketing that comes with the move.

Bronny James is a projected late 1st round pick / early 2nd round pick in the draft. My gut tells me he gets picked way ahead of those projections. Teams know by drafting Bronny you are likely getting Lebron James as well. Although he is not the player he once was, Lebron still put up a very impressive stat line averaging 25.7 points, 8.3 assists, and 7.3 rebounds in 71 starts as a 39-year-old.

If Bronny does get selected ahead of his projections, Lakers fans will be disappointed. The club may or may not have a 1st round pick in the upcoming draft. The Pelicans own the rights to that pick as part of the previous Anthony Davis trade but can choose to opt for the pick during the 2025 draft instead. The Lakers do own 2nd round picks in the draft, but I doubt Bronny is still available at that point. Barring some kind of trade, the Lakers might be out of luck.

It’s definitely going to be an interesting offseason to say the least.
